Camp Patrol

view detail

As part of a beautiful trip along the California coast, we stopped by a river in the Jedediah Redwoods and decided to set up camp. Just as we were arriving, we waved to our "soon-to-be-neighbors" as they headed toward the river.  Although I knew no one was at the campsite next to us, I still got the feeling I was being watched. Impulsively, I looked up and when I did I spotted a beautiful Steller's Jay perched on a child's baseball mitt. He looked like he owned the place and was just waiting for us all to leave so he could go about his business of inspecting the wares. I loved how the orange of the juice drinks complimented the bright blue of his feathers and the watermelon just screamed "summer" to me. I was really glad it was in the scene. I'm not sure I would have thought to put it there on my own.
