"Not So Still Life" was
selected by The Pastel Journal judges as among the
Best Art of 2005. The Pastel 100 Competition is an
international competition with only 19 works
selected in the animal and wildlife category. All
winning entries can be seen in the April 2006
issue of The Pastel Journal magazine.
I am expanding my
painting horizons; I am working on still life paintings.
As you can see from this painting, I was in the middle of
setting up for a compositional study when Biscuit, our
precious little tuxedo kitty-cat, decided to help me (the
novice). After all, SHE has been painted so many times she
probably knows more about setup than I do.
This particular setting
is in my studio in the early morning. The warm tones give
a hint of the sunshine streaming in from the windows to
the viewers' left. The early light makes for some nice
strong shadows, which I love, and some brilliant lighting
on the tips of Biscuit's fur and on the paintbrush
ferrules. Okay, so she is the cutest thing I've ever seen
but I really want to try painting those brushes....
